What does "on me back, mush." mean from the Newsies?

At the very beginning of the Newsies, the character Mush says to Jack, "Howd you sleep?" and he replies with "On me back, Mush." and mush starts dieing laughing! I never understood why it was so funny! hahaha, so does anyone know what that means and why it was so funny?
